Upon arrival in Juliaca airport you will meet your guide and drive towards Puno city. Along the way we make a stop to visit the incredible site of Sillustani tombs, where Inkas and pre-Inkas buried their dead, also walk around and enjoy the breathtaking views of lake Umayoq. After our first ancient ruins site tour we continue to Puno city.
This day, on board of a private boat we visit the floating Islands of Uros, home to the ancient inhabitants of Lake Titicaca. This community has endured for hundreds of years thanks to their continual renovation of the island floor with totora reeds (a plant that grows in the water and swamp). Be amazed at how locals use totora reeds to build canoes, houses, beds and many other things. As part of your visit to this island, experience a smooth and pleasant ride around on a totora reed canoe. Afterwards, visit the Island of Taquile, whose residents are known for their friendliness and for their weavings. At this place enjoy a typical lunch prepared by the local families and bask in their incredible hospitality.
This trip takes the better part of the day with beautiful scenery en route through the high Altiplano region, visiting first Andahuaylillas Church (known as the Andean Sistine Chapel), where you can appreciate some intriguing 16th, 17th and 18th century mural paintings and fully decorated gold altars. Lunch will be in Raqchi community village, where you can also admire and learn about the fascinating construction of the Inka temple named Raqchi in honor of Wiracocha God. An inevitable stop is La Raya (4,300 m. – 14,289 ft.), which is the highest elevation artisan´s market and the halfway point of the journey. Finally, visit the fascinating village of Pukará, famous for its figurines (the two bulls) which can be found on most of the roofs of the Andean houses.
This day, in the morning we will head to the picturesque town of Chinchero, a small village nestled among Andean peaks at the edge of Piuray Lake. The inhabitants continue to live much as they did one hundred years ago. The women of this village practice traditional, Incan weaving techniques – some of the oldest in the Americas – and the more than 50 unique designs produced here have spread throughout the region. After this spectacular experience you will continue to see the incredible circular terraces of Moray, which were used as an Incan laboratory to make acclimatization, hybridization and adaptation of their crops. Then we make a stop in the village of Maras, which was once the most prosperous town in the area because of the salt trading. Afterwards we will head to the salt pans of Maras (Salineras) to see and learn about this truly unique place that have been in continuous use since pre-Inkan times.
In the morning, you will transfer to the community village of Patakancha, where you will start your llama hike for about 1:30 hrs. through an ancient Inka trail alongside the Patakancha river and incredible Andean landscapes. Upon arrival in the familiar Lodge, you will get a warm welcome by the relatives and friends of the Family Quispe Huaman. Once inside the dining room, take a very well-deserved rest and enjoy the view while taking a cup of local herbal tea or Peruvian coffee. After a good rest and before lunch you will be part of two local activities with high cultural immersion content (farming potatoes, potatoes / dehydration process – chuño / moraya). After a rich cultural experience, enjoy a typical Andean lunch prepared by a local family. The remainder of the day you enjoy your place and interact with local people.
This tour will start visiting the extraordinary Tipón archeological Inka site, where you can appreciate the incredible hydraulic system of aqueducts and irrigation system from Inka times. Make a stop at Oropesa town for a close-up experience of making the most famous bread in the Cusco region called “Chuta”. The next stop is to visit the pre-Inkan site of Pikillaqta, the largest provincial outpost ever built by the Wari Empire based in Ayacucho. Its 47-hectare, adobe-walled compound might go unnoticed but; however, it affords a great opportunity to visitors to check out this pre-Inka architecture. Afterwards, go to visit the incredible Pisaq Inka site, where you can stroll through the ruins and learn about the history of the Inkas, taking in the tremendous views of the fascinating agricultural terraces that wrap around the mountain and the valley below.
Early in the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel by our lead guide and depart in private transportation to Challakancha which is the beginning of the hike. Along the journey you will be impressed by the scenic countryside, picturesque villages, and perfect panoramic views of the snow-capped Humantay Mountain. After a well-deserved lunch, you continue until we reach our campsite in Soraypamapa, beautifully situated in the shadows of the surrounding peaks. Here we will be greeted by our well-trained crew staff (chef, assistant chef, and wranglers).
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll ascend to the highest point of the trek, the Salkantay Pass (4,600 m. – 15,180 ft.), from this point you will appreciate the stunning Salkantay snow-capped Mountain (the dominating mountain 6,271 m. – 20,694 ft.). The type of landscape on the way up to the top is like paramo, and the same on the way down for about 2 hours. Enjoy lunch at Huayraqmachay hamlet, in a local family home, with spectacular views of the mountains Humantay, Huayanay and the cloud forest. After lunch, experience a humid forest known as dwarf or elfin forest, which is home to many orchids, flowers, and hummingbirds. We descend approximately 3 ½ hours through dense and evergreen lush vegetation until we reach our next local family home.
After breakfast, start your trek through a beautiful old trail, dense cloud forest vegetation, and stunning viewpoints of valleys and the river below. After lunch we experience a high Jungle niche where coffee, coca plants and fruit plantations can be observed. All of the surrounding area is very green and home to many species of colorful birds such as the famous Cock of the rock, the Peruvian National Bird, beautiful and different sized orchids, and with luck you can observe the Ukumari (The Andean spectacled bear, inspiration of the Paddington bear). In the afternoon you will visit an organic coffee plantation, one of many in the area that produces some of the best organic coffee in the world. In Lucmabamba, the hot air and increased humidity signal that you are even closer to the edge of the Amazon Jungle.
During a 2-3 hour climb up a path mostly composed of original Inca steps, you will get a sense of what hiking through the rainforest would be like. Your first milestone today will be the top of the peak, the last one before you reach the Aobamba River valley that connects to Machu Picchu. When you arrive at the Llactapata Pass (2,736 m/8,974 ft.), you will be delighted to see western side of the Machu Picchu ruins. After a well-deserved rest the hike continues down the mountain until we arrive at Hydro electric train station where you will have lunch, and from here you will take a train ride (30 min) to Machupicchu town (known as Aguas Calientes Town) where your hotel awaits you.
In the morning, after taking a thirty-minute bus ride up a switchback road, you will arrive to the incredible “Lost city of the Inkas”. Your guide will take you on a guided tour and history lesson of this incredible site, enjoying the complicated history and the surprising degree of technology achieved by its builders, the provision of water channels that reveal a deep understanding of hydraulics, and its exceptionally fine stonework. All this magnificent building allows you to go back in time and with the help of your guide revive the existence of those master builders. After a complete overview of the site, you will return to Machu Picchu town for your train ride back to Cusco.
Start your tour with the impressive Colonial Cathedral, which contains over 400 paintings from the Cusqueña School in addition to an impressive collection of colonial art, including a depiction of The Last Supper displaying Cuy, or Guinea Pig, as the main course. Continue on to visit the Temple of the Sun, whose walls and floors were allegedly once covered by sheets of solid gold. Afterwards we head to Saqsayhuaman archeological Inka site, located on the northern slope of Cuzco. This impressive site, which consists of individual stones weighing well over 100 tons and took over seven decades to complete.
