This short Inka trail to Machu Picchu is ideal for those that want to follow in the footsteps of the Inkas and experience beautiful archeological sites, enigmatic Andean mountains and the mysterious cloud forest. Depending on the season you might see the spectacular and mysterious mammal “the spectacle bear of the Andes (“Ukumari” in Quechua language)” whose habitat is the cloud forest and also enjoy of the great variety of flora, including miniature and large orchids. Our journey is escorted by experienced tour leader and a crew of porters that will make your trip the most safe, pleasant and unforgettable experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Short Inka Trail to Machu Picchu

Morning transfer to Ollantaytambo train station for a scenic train journey (1:15 hrs.) until km 104 along the rail road, which is starting point of the hike to Machu Picchu. The 6 to 7 hours trek is along an Inka highway, visiting Inka sites, admiring beautiful waterfalls and experiencing the luxuriant vegetation that is home to hundreds of birds and orchid species. Your lunch (box lunch) will be next to the magnificent Wiñay Wayna Inka site, and then explore the site along with its houses, water fountains and farming terraces. Afterwards you head on to the sun gate, a place from where you can have an astonishing view of Machu Picchu Llaqta. After a well rest with awe-inspiring scenery, you will take the final stretch of the royal Inca highway that ends up in the lost city of the Inkas and can take pictures as from postcards. Then take a bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) and get accommodation in your hotel.

Day 2: Machu Picchu Llaqta

In the morning, after taking a thirty-minute bus ride up a switchback road, you will arrive to the incredible “Lost city of the Inkas”. Your guide will take you on a guided tour and history lesson of this incredible site, contemplating the complicated history and the surprising degree of technology achieved by its builders, the provision of water channels that reveal a deep understanding of hydraulics, and its exceptionally fine stonework. All this magnificent building allows you to go back in time and with the help of your guide revive the existence of those master builders.  After a complete overview of the site, we descend to Machupicchu town for our train ride back to Cusco.

Safety & High-Quality Service

  • Pre-departure briefing. At our office, you will meet your trekking guide and the rest of the group you will travel with and get all the important information before your expedition trip.
  • Licensed and experienced tour guide. We are fortunate to work with an extraordinary team of highly professional tour guides full of passion, inspiration, courage and success, eager to boost unforgettable travel experiences, where the spirit of travelers is accompanied by impeccable, safe and comfortable service.
  • One duffle bag. In order to travel comfortable and light, we recommend to take only the essentials for these two days and one night tour. The train company, that will take in your belongings, allow a maximum of 10 kg / 22 lb. We will provide one duffle bag, if requested, for your personal belongings for the duration of the tour. The rest of your belonging can leave in our luggage store or in your hotel´s storage.
  • First aid kit, oxygen tank and short-wave radios. Our team of guides are trained in first aids and wilderness emergencies. We hold mandatory training sessions yearly in February. Your guide will always carry a first aid kid and oxygen tank to face any emergency related with altitude sickness, travelers’ diarrhea, scrapes, cuts, and others. Evacuations, if necessary, will happen as soon as possible to the nearest medical center.
  • 24/7 customer service. We have a great commitment to provide the best support to your travel experience.

Meals

  • 1 breakfast and 1 box lunch. We respect all diets (vegetarians, vegan or special menus are available at no cost), so just let us know if you have any particular allergies or restrictions. Our travelers love our food!
  • Water on the trail. You will be provided with one bottle (625 ml – 21oz) for your trek. We highly recommend to bring an extra 2L water with you in your camel bag, canteen or bottle.
  • Health & environmental care. Our priority is your enjoyment and comfort; therefore, we are very strict following sanitary care standards in the manipulation of ingredients, preparation of your meals, and disinfection of utensils. All garbage produced along the journey is taken outside of the archeological park of Machu Picchu and then to Cusco city.

Transportation service.

  • Private Car/van. Get transferred in private from your hotel to train station on day 1, and from Ollantaytambo train station to your hotel on day 5.
  • Consettur bus transport. 3 consettur bus tickets. One way ticket on day 1, and round-trip ticket on day 2 in order to visit Machu Picchu.
  • This journey takes one and half hour from Machupicchu town to Ollantaytambo town. This service is with the Expeditions train service. An upgrade to Vistadome or Hiram Bingham train service is available upon request and extra payment of $30.

Accommodation service

  • 1 night in hotel (3 starts). The accommodation is based on tween bed room. A single supplement or upgraded room type is available upon request and extra payment.

Entrance tickets and permits

  • Entrance tickets to Inka trail and Machu Picchu. All people (travelers, porters and guides) doing the Inka trail have to get a permit and tickets from the government with months of anticipation.

  • Breakfast and dinner on day 1, lunch and dinner on day 2
  • Hiking poles. They are optional but encouraged (rentals available from Ukumari Expeditions: $5 a pair per day)
  • Tipping is completely optional based on your comfort level and satisfaction; however, any extra is always welcome. Our entire team is fairly compensated for their service.
  • Others not mentioned in the program & events beyond our control.
