Choquequirao expeditions trek is an epic multi-day trek perfect for those looking to get off the beaten path. The Inka site is set in the hills of the Vilcabamba mountain range outside Cusco, and is considered to be bigger than Machu Picchu, although it´s almost all hidden in the forest. Still not fully excavated, the archeological site of Choquequirao encompass a whole city, a mass of agricultural terraces, residential palaces and a ceremonial water fountains location. Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Capuliyoq – Chikiska

In the morning, after breakfast, you will be pick up from your hotel by your tour guide and start this adventure with a van ride of 4 hours until the trailhead to this incredible Inka site called “Choquequirao”. Along the way get introduced to Peruvian Andes geography with sensational landscapes dominated by impressive glacial tall mountains, deep valleys and picturesque villages. Enjoy a delicious lunch before start your expedition trek with fantastic landscape views. At this point meet the field crew that will take care very well after you (Cook, tent makers and muleteers). After a well-deserved stop it comes the first view stop, from where we can appreciate the magnificent snowcapped mountain range of Vilcabamba and Apurimac River canyon. The trek continues downwards for about 3 to 4 hours through very scenic landscape and beautiful flora and fauna until reach the hamlet of Chikiska where you will spend the night.

Day 2: Chikiska – Maranpata

After a delicious breakfast, your trek starts by crossing the bridge over the Apurimac River and then, it will be 4 hours approximately uphill until the hamlet of Maranpata. Along the way we pass some sugar cane farms and at every resting spot will enjoy the view of the valley from the opposite hillside. Once we arrive in Maranpata the uphill portion is over and have a well-deserved lunch.  After lunch we walk for about one hour to have a close-up view of Choquequirao Inka site, this section of viewpoints is very impressive because of the amazing views of the Apurimac canyon and its surrounding landscape with astonishing sunset on the Choquequirao Inka site.

Day 3: Choquequirao

After breakfast, our guide will take on a guided tour and history lesson of this truly impressive Inka site. Choquequirao is considered to be bigger than Machu Picchu, although it´s almost all hidden in the forest. After a delightful picnic lunch and with the help of your expert tour guide continue your exploration of this incredible remains, reviving the existence of those master builders truly admirable that built Choquequirao with astronomical observatories, temples, palaces, water fountains, water aqueducts, houses and terraces like the llama area, which is place of many beautiful llama depictions of white stones on the wall of narrow farming terraces situated on a ridge overlooking the Apurimac canyon. Following, you will walk back to your resting place.

Day 4: Maranpata – Cusco

After another early breakfast, we will prepare for another challenging day which is our journey back to Cusco. Our trek starts with 4 hours downhill hike to La playa, this section requires trekking poles. Along the way your tour guide will point out flora and fauna you might have missed on your way to Choquequirao Inka site. Once you cross the bridge over Apurimac River it will take 2 hours to lunch spot in nice hamlet of Chikiska. After Lunch another 3 more hours to reach the end of the trail. Before you get on the van you will say good bye to the crew staff and then continue with your tour guide back to Cusco.

Safety & High-Quality Service

  • Pre-departure briefing. At our office, you will meet your trekking guide and the rest of the group you will travel with and get all the important information before your expedition trip.
  • Licensed and experienced tour guide.   • Best trained crew of chef, waiter, tent maker and muleteers. You will meet them before your expeditions trek. Our team is highly trained and do an extraordinary job. They will spoil and look after you for the duration of the entire trek tour.
  • One duffle bag. You will be provided one duffle bag for your personal belongings for the duration of the trek (Maximum weight 6 kg. / 13.2 lbs.). The rest of your belonging can leave in our luggage store or in your hotel´s storage.
  • Cozy familiar lodges. These lodges are small, rustic, clean and very cozy, which are runed by local families along the trail. You will sleep on a comfortable and warm beds, there will be a dining room, living room and clean bathrooms with hot showers. By using these lodges, you are helping to these local family’s economy.
  • Extras included in your tour pack. We are convinced that small details are important in your comfort and travel experience, therefore, you will have a worm and soft pillows and hot water bottle for the night.
  • First aid kit, oxygen tank and short-wave radios. Our team of guides are trained in first aids and wilderness emergencies. We hold mandatory training sessions yearly in February. Your guide will always carry a first aid kid and oxygen tank to face any emergency related with altitude sickness, travelers’ diarrhea, scrapes, cuts, and others. Evacuations, if necessary, will happen as soon as possible to the nearest medical center.
  • 24/7 customer service. We have a great commitment to provide the best support to your travel experience.

Meals

  • 3 breakfast, 4 lunches and 3 dinners. Our talented local family chefs will cook for you a healthy, nutritious and delicious dishes that you will get overwhelmed with the flavor and presentation. We respect all diets (vegetarians, vegan or special menus are available at no cost), so just let us know if you have any particular allergies or restrictions. Our travelers love our food!
  • Snacks on the trail and one cloth snack bag. Every day, before start your trek, the crew will provide fresh fruit, nuts, cookies and sweets for your trek. Your guide will provide one cloth snack bag to use it for the snacks you will be provided daily. In order to avoid contamination of the environment we avoid the usage of plastic bag.
  • Water on the trail. You will be provided with filtered, boiled and cooled water along the duration of your trek and can refill your bottles at every meal stop. We highly recommend to bring with you a camel bag, canteen or bottle of 2 liters capacity.
  • Wake up tea/coffee. Each morning at the local lodges will be on the table coffee or coca tea or simply a delicious hot chocolate to enjoy the early morning view from inside the dinning room.
  • Tea time or happy hour. Get spoiled every day in the afternoon, before dinner, with hot drinks, popcorn, biscuits/cookies, fried wantons filled with fruits, Jam, butter, etc.
  • Health & environmental care. Our priority is your enjoyment and comfort; therefore, we are very strict following sanitary care standards in the manipulation of ingredients, preparation of your meals, disinfection of utensils, water and toilets. Hand sanitizer, bucket of water, soap and towels are supply to wash hands before each meal. All garbage produced along the journey and portable toilet treatments are returned to Cusco city.

Transportation service.

  • Private Car/van. Get transferred from your hotel to trailhead on day 1 and from end of trail to your hotel on day 4.
  • Private horses/mules. All supplementary goods to the lodges service and your duffel bags (with maximum 6 kg. / 13.2 lbs.) will be carry by mules/horses on days: 1, 2 and 4. You only carry your day pack.
  • Emergency horse. This is in case someone needs an extra help along the journey because exhaustion, altitude sickness, travelers’ diarrhea or to get evacuated, if necessary, until meet a car / medical center.

Accommodation service

  • 3 nights on – Family lodges. The accommodation is based on double room occupancy. A single room supplement is available upon request.

Entrance tickets and permits

  • Entrance tickets for Choquequirao archeological park
  • Lodges and community villages pass fees along the trail

  • Day 1 breakfast and day 4 dinner
  • Hiking poles. They are optional but encouraged (rentals available from Ukumari Expeditions: $5 a pair per day)
  • Tipping is completely optional based on your comfort level and satisfaction, however any extra is always welcome. Our entire team is fairly compensated for their service.
  • Others not mentioned in the program & events beyond our control.
