Inka Trail to Machu Picchu 4 Days

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (45mk-28mi) is rated among the best trekking trips in the world because of the exquisite beauty of its natural surroundings. These include different ecological areas from the dry Andean valleys to tropical cloud-forest. Following in the footsteps of the Inkas you will experience amazing archeological Inka sites, enigmatic Andean mountains and the mysterious cloud forest. Depending on the season you might see the spectacular and mysterious Andean bear “the spectacle bear” (Ukumari in Inka language) whose habitat is the cloud forest, but also enjoy of the great variety of flora, including miniature and large orchid species. Our journey is escorted by experienced and professional tour guide and a crew of porters that will make your trip the most safe, pleasant and unforgettable experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Pisqa k´uchu (Km 82) to Huayllabamba

This day, early in the morning escorted by your local guide you will be transfer from your Cusco hotel to our trailhead at Pisqa k´ucho (Km. 82 on the train route to Machu Picchu) the starting point of such great trek following the footsteps of the Inkas. At this point you will meet our local crew of porters and cook that will look after you for the duration of the hike. Our porters carry the majority of the gear for the trek, so you trek only carrying a small daypack with water, rain gear, snacks, a camera, etc. As you walk the trail that linked this ancient empire you will experience a deep valley with semi-arid terrain along the Urubamba River with magnificent views of snowcapped mountains, the great Inka site of Llaqtapata and the valley of Kusipata. After lunch provided by our trained crew, you will continue admiring breathtaking views at every step until we reach our campsite.

Day 2: Huayllabamba to Pacaymayu

Today, after a reenergizing breakfast, start your trek along the steep path towards the highest point of this trek (Warmiwañusqa-Dead Woman´s pass 4,215m/13,910ft). The walk up is demanding but rewarding with astonishing views at every step you take through the montane sub-tropical forest, which is the habitat of the spectacle bear, white tailed deer brocket, miniature and big orchids as many hummingbirds and colorful birds. After enjoying a tremendous sense of accomplishment and well-deserved resting time, you will start to walk down the other side of the mountain you climbed up stopping into many breaks for appreciating the beautiful landscape and water cascades. At the end of a gorge is the campsite with a spectacular view.

  • Elevation: Starting Point: 3,000 m. / 9,842 ft. Highest point: 4,215 m. / 13,828 ft. Overnight: On – Trail camping: Pacaymayu (Altitude: 3,600 m. / 11,811 ft.)

Day 3: Pacaymayu to Wiñaywayna

This day, you will start trekking up to the second pass (3,950m/12,870ft) visiting the incredible Inka site of Runk´uraqay. Upon arrival to the summit enjoy of the fantastic views of amazing snowcapped mountains and the exuberant cloud forest. From here descend until the remarkable Inka site of Sayaqmarka, and from here the trail continues through some beautiful cloud forest until you reach lunch spot. After lunch visit the third serene Inka site of “P´huyu Patamarca” (Town above the Clouds) that has an impressive view of the surroundings. Before getting on the campsite, you will visit the grandiose terraced hillside sites of Inti Pata (the sun´s place) and the amazing temple to water (Wiñaywayna – forever young).

  • Elevation: Starting Point: 3,600 m. / 11,811 ft. Highest point: 3,950 m. / 12,959 ft. Overnight: On – Trail camping: Wiñaywayna (Altitude: 2,650 m. / 8,694 ft.)

Day 4: Wiñaywayna to Machu Picchu

After early breakfast, the final part of the trail on the back of Machu Picchu Mountain is a stunningly beautiful traverse leading to the Gate of the Sun overlooking Machu Picchu. There is no way to describe the feeling of the first views of this great Inka site, and on the rainy season as the mist rises off in the morning the famous site appears unreal and beautiful in front of you. Upon arrival to the incredible “lost city of the Inkas”, escorted by your professional tour guide, enjoy a fascinating private tour of this incredible remains with its complicated history of the site, the surprising degree of technology achieved by its builders, the provision of water channels that reveal a deep understanding of hydraulics, and its exceptionally fine stonework. All these magnificent buildings allow you to go back in time and with the help of your guide revive the existence of those builders truly admirable taking in the awe-inspiring scenery. After this fantastic tour take a bus to Aguas Calientes town for boarding the train back to Cusco.

Safety & High-Quality Service

  • Pre-departure briefing. At our office, you will meet your trekking guide and the rest of the group you will travel with and get all the important information before your expedition trip.
  • Licensed and experienced tour guide. We are fortunate to work with an extraordinary team of highly professional tour guides full of passion, inspiration, courage and success, eager to boost unforgettable travel experiences, where the spirit of travelers is accompanied by impeccable, safe and comfortable service.
  • Best trained crew of chef, waiter, tent maker and porters. You will meet them before your expeditions trek. Our team is highly trained and do an extraordinary job. They will spoil and look after you for the duration of the entire trek tour.
  • One duffle bag. You will be provided one duffle bag for your personal belongings for the duration of the trek (Maximum weight 6 kg. / 13.2 lbs.). The rest of your belonging can leave in our luggage store or in your hotel´s storage.
  • Quality camping equipment. You will have spacious sleeping tents, dinning and kitchen tent, as well as tables, chairs, lamps, portable toilet tent and all necessary utensils.
  • Extras included in your tour pack. We are convinced that small details are important in your comfort and travel experience, therefore, you will have a worm sleeping bag and liner, inflatable sleeping pad, a pillow, hot water bottle for the night and solar lamp for your tent.
  • First aid kit, oxygen tank and short-wave radios. Our team of guides are trained in first aids and wilderness emergencies. We hold mandatory training sessions yearly in February. Your guide will always carry a first aid kid and oxygen tank to face any emergency related with altitude sickness, travelers’ diarrhea, scrapes, cuts, and others. Evacuations, if necessary, will happen as soon as possible to the nearest medical center.
  • 24/7 customer service. We have a great commitment to provide the best support to your travel experience.

Meals

  • 3 breakfast, 3 lunches and 3 dinners. Our talented mountain chefs will cook for you a healthy, nutritious and delicious dishes that you will get overwhelmed with the flavor and presentation. We respect all diets (vegetarians, vegan or special menus are available at no cost), so just let us know if you have any particular allergies or restrictions. Our travelers love our food!
  • Snacks on the trail and one cloth snack bag. Every day, before start your trek, the crew will provide fresh fruit, nuts, cookies and sweets for your trek. Your guide will provide one cloth snack bag to use it for the snacks you will be provided daily. In order to avoid contamination of the environment we avoid the usage of plastic bag.
  • Water on the trail. You will be provided with filtered, boiled and cooled water along the duration of your trek and can refill your bottles at every meal stop. We highly recommend to bring with you a camel bag, canteen or bottle of 2 liters capacity.
  • Wake up tea/coffee. Each morning at campsite you will be woke up, by our outstanding team, with a cup of coffee or coca tea or simply a delicious hot chocolate and enjoy the early morning view from inside your tent.
  • Tea time or happy hour. Get spoiled every day in the afternoon, before dinner, with hot drinks, popcorn, biscuits/cookies, fried wantons filled with fruits, Jam, butter, etc.
  • Health & environmental care. Our priority is your enjoyment and comfort; therefore, we are very strict following sanitary care standards in the manipulation of ingredients, preparation of your meals, disinfection of utensils, water and toilet tent. Hand sanitizer, bucket of water, soap and towels are supply to wash hands before each meal. All garbage produced along the journey and portable toilet treatments are returned to Cusco city.
  • Transportation service.
  • Private Car/van. Get transferred from your hotel to trailhead on day 1 and on the last day from Ollantaytambo to your hotel.
  • Private porters. All camping equipment, food and your duffel bags (with maximum 6 kg. / 13.2 lbs.) will be carry by porters on days: 1, 2, 3, and 4. You will carry only your day pack.
  • Consettur bus transport. On day 4 you will take a bus down from Machu Picchu site, after your guided tour, to Train station in Machupicchu town.
  • This journey takes one and half hour from Machupicchu town to Ollantaytambo town. This service is with the Expeditions train service, an upgrade to Vistadome or Hiram Bingham train service is available upon request and extra payment.

Accommodation service

  • 3 nights on – trail Camping. The accommodation is based on double capacity tent on days 1, 2, and 3. For your comfort 2 people sleep in 3-person capacity ten. A single tent supplement is available upon request and extra payment.

Entrance tickets and permits

  • Entrance tickets and permits to Inka trail and Machu Picchu. All people (travelers, porters and guides) doing the Inka trail 4 days have to get a permit and tickets from the government with months of anticipation.

  • Day 1 breakfast and day 4 lunch and dinner
  • Hiking poles. They are optional but encouraged (rentals available from Ukumari Expeditions: $5 a pair per day)
  • Tipping is completely optional based on your comfort level and satisfaction; however, any extra is always welcome. Our entire team is fairly compensated for their service.
  • Others not mentioned in the program & events beyond our control.
