Itinerary

DAY 01: ARRIVAL IN QUITO

When you arrive in Quito, Ecuador’s capital (which sits 2,800 meters above sea level at the foot of the Pichincha volcano), you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel.

  • Accommodation: Wyndham Garden Quito
  • Meals: None

DAY 2: QUITO – COCA – JUNGLE

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up and transfer you to the Quito airport for your flight to Coca

You will depart from Quito airport at 11:00 a.m. (subject to change). A 30-minute flight over the Andes Mountains will take you to a bustling oil town called Coca, located in the Amazon Basin. You will have a quick lunch at Sacha’s private home and then head to the docks in town, where you will board Sacha’s private canoes for the 2-hour trip downriver to Sacha’s Lodge property.

A 30-minute hike through the rainforest will take you to Lake Pilchicocha. Here, you will be met by native workers to paddle across the lake to your final destination. You will arrive at Sacha Lodge around 3:30 or 4:00 p.m. (subject to change).

Swim in Lake Pilchicocha, which is a blackwater lake that is home to many species of fish and animals. A refreshing swim after arriving may be just what you need after being out in the equatorial heat all day. Birdwatching from the mini-tower offers guests an excellent opportunity to see several species of birds common in the area around the lodge. Plus, it’s a great place to watch the sunset. Visit the butterfly house with your naturalist guide to see the beautiful colors of many different species of butterflies.

  • Accommodation: Sacha Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast/Box Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3: BIG LIANA AND SMALL LIANA

Morning activity starts between 6:00 and 7:00. Start walking along the Liana Chica trail and arrive at the hanging bridge, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the rainforest canopy and the different species of vibrantly colored birds.

Designed to be a self-contained rigid hanging bridge, it is one of only a few in the world! Located within the Sacha private reserve, 2 miles from the banks of the Napo River and 1 mile from the lodge, the hanging bridge offers guests the opportunity to get an up-close and personal view of the rainforest canopy.

Two of the three towers have viewing platforms every 12 meters, making the towers accessible to everyone. The hanging bridge is 36 meters high and 275 meters long, giving guests a “bird’s eye view” of all the wonder and beauty the rainforest has to offer.

The hanging bridge is designed as a sturdy walkway that allows guests to move around quietly while enjoying the spectacular views.

After the canopy walk, Liana Grande will pass through terra firme habitats and igapo forests, where native guides will explain to you about the different species of medicinal plants that have been used in their culture for hundreds of years.

Liana Grande will turn into the Higuerón trail, which will take you through pristine primary forest with huge Kapok and fig trees towering hundreds of feet above your head.

After lunch, you can choose to take a leisurely walk along the Napo River or choose a slightly more challenging hike on the Leoncillo trail to try and spot the elusive dusky titi monkey. Either way, the trails will take you back to the main boardwalk for your final hike and canoe ride back to the lodge.

  • Accommodation: Sacha Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast/Box Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4: LAGARTOCOCHA – MOUNT SUMAC

After breakfast, you will check out of the lodge and begin your hike along the Lagartococha trail. This trail offers you the opportunity to learn more about the natives and their relationship with the forest. Learn about the trees where the natives believe the spirits of their ancestors live and about the mysterious “dwende” or devil-man of the forest.

After arriving at Lagartococha Lake, take a leisurely canoe ride through a natural swamp, which is home to anacondas, caimans, and capybaras. After the canoe ride, a hike to the other side of Largatococha may give you the chance to see capuchin monkeys or squirrels playfully jumping between the trees.

Return from the hike or canoe ride and head back to the lodge for a refreshing dip in the lake or a nice, relaxing nap in your personal hammock on your private balcony.

After lunch, your native guide will teach you how to fish for the infamous sharp-toothed piranha. Please note that piranhas will never attack a person and swimming at the same time is perfectly safe and fun.

Around 3:30pm you will begin what many consider the best trail at Sacha, a silent canoe ride through the flooded Amazon forest. Where you will have a good chance of being surrounded by troops of squirrels, capuchins and howler monkeys. Keep your eyes peeled for the shy and elusive river otter as well as the incredibly well camouflaged three-toed sloth!

After your amazing ride through the flooded forest, you will arrive at Sacha’s 135-foot wooden tower built around an ancient Kapok tree. Get up-close views of vibrantly colored birds through Sacha’s powerful telescopes and watch the sunset with an incredible view of Mount Sumaco, a volcano, and possibly a view of the snow-capped caps of the Andes.

Leaving the tower just before or after sunset will give you an experience you won’t easily forget. A canoe ride back through the flooded forest at night will be a breathtaking experience. Listen to the symphony of frogs and insects as you navigate the narrow flooded forest trail, keeping your eyes open for caimans. Watch the various species of bats flying overhead and listen to the numerous species of nocturnal birds emitting their mysterious nighttime songs. Finally, after your fascinating canoe trip down the Amazon, you will return to Lake Pilchicocha and the cozy lights of the Sacha Lodge.
